How clean is your aura?
Those of us of a certain vintage (or indeed the younger generation who are binge-watching “Friends” on Amazon Prime) will remember Phoebe Buffay “cleansing Ross’s aura” by plucking the air around him. We all laughed at her quirkiness and eccentricity and the fact that she could believe there was an invisible “aura” surrounding all human beings.
Fast forward to 2025 and Science is slowly realising that there may be some truth in the phenomenon of auras. Humans produce carbon dioxide as a byproduct of cellular respiration, and this is exhaled during breathing and a much smaller amount is excreted through our skin. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the air surrounding a person is therefore slightly elevated compared to the overall atmospheric level.
As the human body itself is a heating element; it heats up the surrounding air by convection. The heated air assumes a natural ascending airflow due to the temperature difference with the surrounding lower air temperature.
Our “aura” doesn’t just consist of slightly raised air temperature and carbon dioxide levels; however, research suggests that each person is surrounded by a unique cloud of microorganisms, including bacteria, yeast, and shed skin cells. This “aura” is invisible to the naked eye, but it’s a real phenomenon with scientific basis, according to Yale Scientific Magazine and it can affect ourselves and those around us.
Ancient systems of medicine, have been referring to “aura” for thousands of years. Each layer is said to correlate to a different element of your physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional health and it is thought that these layers can interact with one another to influence your overall health. I’m sure you can think of someone who leaves you feeling physically drained after an interaction, or someone who, by contrast, lifts your spirits and makes you feel good? Have you ever considered that it might be your energetic fields are not resonating or harmonising?
So can we really “clean” or improve our aura? In the same way we take a shower to wash away physical dirt, you can also “bathe” yourself in positive thoughts to wash away negative energy and focus on more optimistic ideas. Burning sage is an ancient tradition used to clear rooms or people of negative energy. This may not be your cup of tea, but I’m sure you have experienced an uplifting feeling after smelling a particular scent and the careful, well-placed use of essential oils can be refreshing and energising. Spending time practising meditation or yoga nidra focussing on your emotional and mental health may also boost the good vibes of your aura. At Wild Rose Yoga, I believe your mental and physical health are deeply connected and closely intertwined and together, we work toward what serves your highest self.
